Straw Poll: Conservatives Pick Fred Thompson

Survey Of 91,000 Grassroots Conservatives Gives Thompson
Clear Lead

Maxwell, IA (CR Newswire)-- A nationwide Straw Poll of grassroots conservatives conducted by Grassfire.org has given Fred Thompson a nearly two-to-one lead over the closest challenger.

When asked whom they would vote for if the Republican primary were held today, 26% preferred Fred Thompson followed by Mitt Romney (16%), Newt Gingrich (14%), Rudy Giuliani (13%), John McCain (8%) and Tom Tancredo (7%). “The results were somewhat surprising considering Thompson has not announced his candidacy,” says Grassfire.org President Steve Elliott. “It appears the conservative base is not thrilled with the current candidates and is eager to give Thompson a chance.”

Rasmussen poll: Fred Thompson now tied with Giuliani at top of GOP field

According to USA TODAY:

Just hours after The Los Angeles Times report that its polling shows Fred Thompson now in second place among Republican presidential contenders, Rasmussen Reports has this to say:
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has to share his spot atop the field of Republican presidential hopefuls this week. The newest face in the race, former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson, is now tied with Giuliani.

Rasmussen's latest automated national poll of like Republican primary voters and caucus-goers shows:

• Giuliani was the choice of 24%, vs. 23% a week ago.• Thompson is also the choice of 24%, vs. his 17% support a week ago.• Mitt Romney and Sen. John McCain were tied at third, with 11% support each (vs. 15% a week ago for Romney and 14% for McCain).
Rasmussen says its survey of 633 "likely Republican primary voters," which includes some independents, has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points.

Rasmussen's analysis of the Thompson numbers?

It is not unusual for a candidate to gain ground in the polls when they first announce their intentions. However, Thompson's rise has been meteoric.

Thompson moves into second place in recent poll

Thompson, who just formed an exploratory committee and is the newest face in the race, immediately moved into second place. With 17% support, he is within six points of the frontrunner. That’s closer than anybody has been to Giuliani in 20 consecutive weekly polls. Thompson is also competitive in a variety of general election match-ups with potential Democratic nominees.
